Learn the answers to frequently asked questions about the Middle School of Science and Technology Online.
What types of students would be a good fit for the Middle School of Science and Technology Online?
MSST offers a curriculum focused on science and technology that allows students to explore their interests. The program can serve as a home school program, a supplement for home school programs, and a supplement for traditional public or private education. Many schools have not updated their course offerings to meet changing needs, and MSST aims to be an exception to this trend. In addition to courses in science and technology, students will have the opportunity to explore business, journalism, and other disciplines not traditionally offered in the brick-and-mortar classroom.

What science and technology courses are offered?
A total of 8 core science courses are offered and include the scientific method, psychology, biology, health, earth science, chemistry, nutrition, and physics. A total of 6 core technology courses are offered, and include word processing, internet safety, web design, AI, engineering, and computer science. For the two capstone research courses, students can select either science or technology as their research focus.

What is asynchronous self-paced online learning?
Asynchronous self-paced online learning allows students to attend a rigorous middle school program while participating in other pursuits, such as athletics, the entertainment arts, or another middle school program. Students are assigned four courses each quarter and are given eight weeks to complete the course readings and assignments. Each week consists of course readings and five assignments. Even-numbered weeks, except for the final week (Weeks 2, 4, and 6) will include an additional practice quiz. A midterm is offered in Week 5 and a final assignment or exam is offered in Week 8. Students are asked to complete the weeks in order, but can theoretically complete all 8 weeks' worth of assignments during the first week of class. Students should wait for feedback from the instructor before moving on to the next week, but all input will be timely to allow flexibility.

Can I enroll my child in the program over the summer to Expedite their graduation?
Yes - optional terms are offered over the Summer between May and September for those interested.

Can I enroll my child in just one course?
The option to enroll in one course is not available - all students are required to start the program in the Quarter 1 Year 1 courses. These courses help students build the foundations that they will need to participate in later coursework at an advanced level. Those interested in the program may choose to enroll their child in one quarter at a time, even if these quarters are discontinuous. For example, students may enroll each Summer to work towards program completion.

What skills will students learn before graduation?
Students will develop valuable life skills, including budgeting, editing, web design, email writing, using AI, thinking critically, and conducting original research.
